Pet of the Month - Pickles

This month's VPNA Pet(s) of the Month is Pickles! This adorable bunny will be receiving a generous gift basket custom curated just for her from our neighbor Dr. Benjamin Wright & his team at Lakewood Vet Center.

The Hanson family has been residents on Miller Ave in Vickery Place for 15 years.  Last March, after losing their beloved family dog, they welcomed Pickles, the Netherland dwarf bunny.  Pickles has since filled their hearts with love and brought so much joy. Her playful antics and gentle nature have taught them so much about caring for a prey animal, requiring patience, training, and lots of love. Pickles is now a cherished member of their family, and they can't imagine life without her.
Be sure to wish them “congratulations” for being VPNA’s Pet of the Month winner for April 2025!

Yard of the Month - 5525 Willis Ave

Spring is in full bloom, and this month’s Yard of the Month winner has captured the season’s spirit. Congratulations to Tracy and James Silk, whose home and garden have brought color, charm, and elegance to Vickery Place.

Perfectly trimmed boxwoods provide a polished frame to the front, while whimsical topiaries, playfully decorated for Easter, add a seasonal and cheerful touch. Vibrant pansies punctuate the yard with bursts of purple, red, yellow, and white, and the lush, green lawn is a masterclass in curb appeal.

The backyard is just as inviting! The centerpiece is a beautiful pool, surrounded by a thoughtful arrangement of plantings and dĂ©cor. Ligustrum and abelia provide bright green pops while colorful pansies continue their show as borders.  Trees such as Magnolias, Japanese Maples and citrus provide additional structure.  Sculptures nestled among the greenery and mirrored windows artfully hung on the fence give the yard an artistic, whimsical touch. The result is a vibrant yet serene space—perfect for summer relaxation!

Tracy and James moved to Dallas five years ago for work; prior to settling here, they lived in both Manhattan and the D.C. area. Though they’ve lived in some of the country’s most dynamic cities, they’ve fallen in love with Vickery Place for its vibrant feel, proximity to downtown, and walkability to fantastic restaurants, bars, and shops.  We are happy they are here!

We would like to thank North Haven Gardens for sponsoring our Yard of the Month.  Tracy and James will receive a $50 gift card to keep up their yard beautiful!

CHUY'S is Moving!!

City of Dallas News - April

On March 20th, the City Plan Commission (CPC) recommended Parking Reform to Dallas City Council.

The final CPC proposal provides immense opportunity for context-sensitive housing and small business development by moving toward flexible parking mandates across the city. Benefits include:

  • Neighborhood-scale restaurants will be able to thrive in walkable mixed use areas, while apartments can be designed around people first;
  • Office buildings can be re-imagined without additional costs and space for parking garages;.
  • Areas around light rail and streetcar stations can evolve into walkable neighborhoods without forcing auto-dependency;
  • Streamlining development and adding predictability in the permitting process, encouraging new attainable-priced housing to be built, and protecting single-family homes.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Removing parking mandates downtown and within 1/2-mile of light rail and streetcar stations
  • Removing parking mandates for office and most retail properties
  • Removing parking mandates from industrial properties except when next to a single-family home
  • Reducing parking mandates for single-family homes and duplex homes to a minimum of one parking space
  • Reducing mandates for multifamily from one space per bedroom to one-half space per unit
  • Reducing parking mandates for restaurants and bars, and removing mandates completely for those under 2,500 square feet
  • Updating bicycle parking design standards to encourage top quality bicycle facilities

Parking Reform will move to the City Council this spring for a final vote. Stay tuned and continue to weigh in with your voice and vision for Dallas.
