August Yard of the Month - 5413 Goodwin Ave

5413 Goodwin is the home of 17 years of Barbara and Walt Marcum and their adorable dog Willa. Barbara and Walt moved to Goodwin and Vickery Place from their home on Ridgedale after raising their daughter. Opposite of most empty nesters, Barbara and Walt relocated to a larger home so they could comfortably host friends and large gatherings. So, imagine our excitement in meeting this lovely couple and dog, and receiving a full tour of their beautiful, front-to-back designed outdoor garden experience. 

Elegant looking and smart in design, Barbara and Walt follow a straightforward textbook Texas landscaping model using beautifully resilient perennials in beds and containers to incorporate color. As a matter fact, Walt’s tip is to visit Home Depot or Rubial’s once a year to buy pre-planted pot of color to drop into empty pots around the yard. The bigger and fuller the pots are with color, the less appealing they are to destructive squirrels.

 The Marcum’s give credit to Complete Land Sculpture for their flow-through garden design, elevated hardscaping in front and back, and harmony of water features on the back perimeter. But, like many Vickery Place yard lovers, the Marcum’s maintain their own landscaping, leaving fertilizing and aeration to the professionals at TruGreen.

 5413 Goodwin is a beautiful example of glorious looking yards through smart design. Some favorites the Marcum’s recommend are heat-tolerant Zoysia grass for front and back, large Maple and crepe myrtle trees for shade, Japanese maples, nandinas, and encore azaleas in beds, and hydrangeas along an east-fence line.
