Yard of the Month - 5413 Goodwin
Congratulations to Barbara and Walt Marcum and Willa for winning Yard of the Month for August 2024. And a sincere thank you to North haven Gardens for their continued support of Vickery Placeโs Yard of the Month initiative. In support of outdoor beautification, North haven Gardens will gift Barbara and Walt a $50 gift card.
5413 Goodwin is a beautiful example of glorious looking yards through smart design. Some favorites the Marcumโs recommend are heat-tolerant Zoysia grass for front and back, large Maple and crepe myrtle trees for shade, Japanese maples, nandinas, and encore azaleas in beds, and hydrangeas along an east-fence line.
Pets of the Month - Cindy and Millie
This month's VPNA Pet of the Month is Cinderella & Millie! Cinderella & Millie will be receiving a generous gift basket custom curated just for them from our neighbor Dr. Benjamin Wright & his team at Lakewood Vet Center.
Cindy is a 4 year old Dalmatian who moved to Texas from Sweden in 2020. Millie is about 5 years old and is a Chocolate Lab Rescue from Retrieve A Friend here in the DFW area. They both love taking long walks around Vickery Place and love to say "Hi!" to their friends on the sidewalks. Cindy loves to do Agility training at What A Great Dog! whereas Millie prefers to play fetch in the yard. Be sure to say hey around the neighborhood!

Do you know the difference between Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke?
As we dive deeper into the hot summer months, it's crucial to be aware of the risks associated with extreme heat and how to handle them. The image provided by the City of Dallas offers vital information on recognizing and responding to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, two serious heat-related conditions.
Heat Exhaustion
Symptoms:
- Fainting or dizziness
- Excessive sweating
- Cool, pale, clammy skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid, weak pulse
- Muscle cramps
What to Do:
- Move to a Cooler Place: Get to an air-conditioned environment or a shady spot to help lower your body temperature.
- Hydrate: Drink water if you are fully conscious. It's important to rehydrate to help your body cool down.
- Cool Down: Take a cool shower or use cold compresses to help bring your body temperature down.
Heat Stroke
Symptoms:
- Throbbing headache
- No sweating
- Body temperature above 103ยฐF
- Red, hot, dry skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid, strong pulse
- Possible loss of consciousness
What to Do:
- Call 911 Immediately: Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt action is crucial.
- Cool the Person Down: While waiting for emergency services, take immediate steps to cool the person. Move them to a cooler place, use cold compresses, and fan them to help reduce their body temperature.
Heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly, especially during the peak summer months. Recognizing the symptoms and knowing the proper steps to take can make a significant difference in outcomes. Stay vigilant, stay cool, and ensure you and your loved ones are safe from the dangers of extreme heat.
That's it for this month! Let us know if there is anything you'd like to see in the newsletter!
