Pet of the Month - Vickery Chickens
This month's VPNA Pet(s) of the Month are the Chickens on Vickery! They will be receiving a generous gift basket custom curated just for them from our neighbor Dr. Benjamin Wright & his team at Lakewood Vet Center.
Neighbors across Vickery Place have likely heard of and even visited the chickens at 5319 Vickery Blvd. If you haven’t, then be sure to add it to your walking route.
Jenn and Ken adopted the flock from Geneva Heights Elementary School at the beginning of the global pandemic in 2020. Since moving to Vickery Place, the chickens have delighted and entertained countless families and dogs out for a walk. There have been more in the flock, and sometimes less. But the brood is currently stabilized at an awesome 8.
The Dawkins’ family cares for the chickens every day and generously shares their bounty with their neighbors. You may follow @emmy_eggs on Instagram and even sign up yourself for eggs (1/2 dozen at a time) via the SignUpGenius.com link in the bio.
Stop by and visit the chickens and say hi to The Dawkins. Be sure to also wish them “congratulations” for being VPNA’s Pet of the Month for March 2024!
Yard of the Month - 5629 Richard Ave
In 2019, Jeannie and Tom Morrison were searching for a new home after moving from Midland, TX to be closer to their daughter and twin granddaughters. They had a wonderful realtor who showed them many houses around Dallas, but they still struggled to find the right one. Their only stipulation was that it did not have a detached garage. By chance, that realtor somehow got them inside 5629 Richard Ave and within minutes, they knew this would be their next home, detached garage and all.
The beautiful blue Craftsman-style-but-with-a-coastal-vibe two story not far from Greenville Ave is only a decade old but small details make this abode stand out with character, from the expert trim on the front door to the inviting couch on the exterior porch. The surrounding beds have been wonderfully landscaped with Jeannie’s vision in mind. A large bright blue pot holds trimmed rosemary at the edge while the beds display nandia surrounding lush lavender roses. Colorful pansies outline the beds and add to the charm while neat pavers make a path to the back yard among a bright red crepe myrtle and garlic plants that fill the air with their aroma. Jeannie and Tom are grateful to Brentley’s Landscape who helped them fulfill their vision and Greenland Hills for their expert weekly yard maintenance.
One interesting note about this property is that an older oak tree in the middle of the front yard was struck by lightning not once, but twice, before the owners decided not to press their luck and had it removed. A younger red oak has replaced it but in hopefully a safer location.
Jeannie and Tom love living in Vickery Place because of the convenience it offers to so many of their favorite restaurants and other locations around Dallas. They can’t imagine living anywhere else!
We would like to thank Northaven Gardens for their ongoing support of Yard Of The Month. The winners will receive a $50 gift card.

Kroger Community Rewards
During the Q4 period of 2023 we only had 23 households signed up for our Kroger Community Rewards. With nearly 1200 homes in Vickery Place, we can fund events like this month's donations to local Pantries with no effort every time you get groceries! If you shop at Kroger, please take the time to sign up below and a portion of your purchases go to supporting local schools, charity drives, and neighborhood events.
When you do your grocery shopping at Kroger, don’t forget there is an easy way to also support Vickery Place Neighborhood Association. VPNA is a registered charity with the Kroger Community Rewards Program. A few simple steps will help raise funds to support more neighborhood activities. https://www.kroger.com/account/communityrewards/
To Connect With Kroger Community Rewards:
• Sign into your Kroger Rewards digital account (or easily set one up if you do not already have an account).
• Select “My Account”.
• Scroll down to the ‘Community Rewards’ section of your account page.
• Select ‘Enroll Now’ or ‘Edit’.
• Enter the name of the organization you wish to support.
• Select ‘Vickery Place Neighborhood Association’ and click on ‘Save’.
Any transactions moving forward using the card number associated with your Kroger digital account will be applied to the Community Rewards program. It takes about 10 days for the Community Rewards totals to begin displaying on your receipt. Vickery Place NA gets quarterly rewards payments—last quarter we received $44.22. The more neighbors who shop with Kroger and connect their digital account with Vickery Place, the more funds our organization will earn! Thank You!

Mosquito Intervention
March is the month that Mosquitoes are out and laying eggs. Early intervention and sustained maintenance can bring great results for everyone in the neighborhood. Reducing the mosquito population in a neighborhood can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Here are three effective ways neighbors can take action:
- Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so one of the most effective ways to reduce their population is to eliminate their breeding grounds. Neighbors can work together to identify and eliminate any sources of standing water around their homes and yards, such as clogged gutters, unused containers, or water-filled depressions in the ground.
- Use Mosquito Traps: Installing mosquito traps in strategic locations around the neighborhood can help to capture and kill adult mosquitoes. There are various types of traps available, including those that use carbon dioxide or attractants to lure mosquitoes.
- Maintain Lawns and Gardens: Keeping lawns and gardens well-maintained can also help to reduce mosquito populations. Neighbors can work together to regularly mow lawns, trim vegetation, and remove any debris or clutter that could provide hiding places for mosquitoes during the day.
