Pet of the Month - Mister

This month's VPNA Pet of the Month is Mister! He will receive a generous gift basket custom curated just for them from our neighbor Dr. Benjamin Wright & his team at Lakewood Vet Center.
Mister is a bichpoo (Bichon Frise & Poodle Mix) puppy who lives on Richard Ave and loves to play. He's a tiny guy who is scared of nothing - he loves all dogs and all people. He prefers the dog park over walks, but you might still see him walking the neighborhood from time to time. If you do, be sure to say "hi" and congratulate him on winning March Pet of the Month!!

Spring Break Travel Prep From Lakewood Vet Center:
Is travel in the cards for your Spring Break this year? Whether your pet’s coming along for the fun or having a staycation, make sure to include your pets in your planning! 🐾🌸
● Schedule a veterinary visit to check that your pet’s vaccines are up to date. Also,
check that your pet’s microchip registration is current. No microchip? Now’s the
time!
● If you’re taking your pet across state or international borders, health certificates
and other documentation from an accredited veterinarian may be required. We’re
ready to help with health certificates and will ensure your pet is healthy enough to
travel.
● Know for sure that your carrier will welcome your pet (some airlines now have
breed and destination restrictions), what types of carriers and kennels are
allowed on the plane, and how to label them.
● Make frequent stops if you’re driving. At least every 3-4 hours is best.
● Find a 24-hour emergency clinic in your destination. If your pet becomes sick or
injured, you’ll be prepared.
● If your pet will be boarding, make sure you check with your facility to determine
their requirements about vaccinations and parasite prevention as each facility
has different regulations. Make sure any needed vaccinations are done at least
two weeks prior to your pet’s stay.
● For detailed information on traveling with your pet, visit the USDA Pet Travel site.
● Need to make an appointment for vaccines or a health certificate? Call Lakewood

Yard of the Month - 5250 Vickery Blvd.

We are excited to announce Haylee and Currey Hall of 5250 Vickery Blvd as our March Yard of the Month! Their beautiful garden is an excellent example of how to seamlessly transition from winter to spring, maintaining interest and beauty throughout the year.
One of the standout features of their yard is the use of Mexican heather grass, which provides vibrant winter interest. Its soft, wispy foliage remains striking through the cooler months, offering a perfect backdrop to the other plants in their landscape. As the seasons change, salvia takes center stage, thriving in the Texas heat and blooming throughout the year. Its bright flowers attract pollinators and add a splash of color, making it a great choice for both beauty and function.
In addition to the seasonal plants, Haylee and Currey’s yard includes hardy, evergreen shrubs like rosemary and nandinas. These plants add year-round greenery and structure, ensuring their garden looks neat and well-maintained no matter the season. The rosemary’s fragrant foliage and the nandinas’ glossy leaves create a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape that’s both practical and attractive.
Currey’s love for gardening extends beyond the front yard, as he has created several raised vegetable beds in the backyard. He enjoys growing a variety of vegetables, from squash to beans, adding a personal touch to their outdoor space and an endless supply of tomatoes throughout the summer!
We would like to thank North Haven Gardens for sponsoring our Yard of the Month. Haylee and Currey will receive a $50 gift card to keep up the good work!

Kroger Community Rewards
During the Q4 period of 2023 we only had 23 households signed up for our Kroger Community Rewards. With nearly 1200 homes in Vickery Place, we can fund events like this month's donations to local Pantries with no effort every time you get groceries! If you shop at Kroger, please take the time to sign up below and a portion of your purchases go to supporting local schools, charity drives, and neighborhood events.

When you do your grocery shopping at Kroger, don’t forget there is an easy way to also support Vickery Place Neighborhood Association. VPNA is a registered charity with the Kroger Community Rewards Program. A few simple steps will help raise funds to support more neighborhood activities. https://www.kroger.com/account/communityrewards/
To Connect With Kroger Community Rewards:
• Sign into your Kroger Rewards digital account (or easily set one up if you do not already have an account).
• Select “My Account”.
• Scroll down to the ‘Community Rewards’ section of your account page.
• Select ‘Enroll Now’ or ‘Edit’.
• Enter the name of the organization you wish to support.
• Select ‘Vickery Place Neighborhood Association’ and click on ‘Save’.
Any transactions moving forward using the card number associated with your Kroger digital account will be applied to the Community Rewards program. It takes about 10 days for the Community Rewards totals to begin displaying on your receipt. Vickery Place NA gets quarterly rewards payments—last quarter we received $44.22. The more neighbors who shop with Kroger and connect their digital account with Vickery Place, the more funds our organization will earn! Thank You!

Mosquito Intervention
March is the month that Mosquitoes are out and laying eggs. Early intervention and sustained maintenance can bring great results for everyone in the neighborhood. Reducing the mosquito population in a neighborhood can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Here are three effective ways neighbors can take action:
- Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so one of the most effective ways to reduce their population is to eliminate their breeding grounds. Neighbors can work together to identify and eliminate any sources of standing water around their homes and yards, such as clogged gutters, unused containers, or water-filled depressions in the ground.
- Use Mosquito Traps: Installing mosquito traps in strategic locations around the neighborhood can help to capture and kill adult mosquitoes. There are various types of traps available, including those that use carbon dioxide or attractants to lure mosquitoes.
- Maintain Lawns and Gardens: Keeping lawns and gardens well-maintained can also help to reduce mosquito populations. Neighbors can work together to regularly mow lawns, trim vegetation, and remove any debris or clutter that could provide hiding places for mosquitoes during the day.
